WHEELIN JAZZ SAVED
MY LIFE

— Steve Oaks

Road to Recovery

“I was on my way to pick up my very pregnant wife to take her to an appointment to see how our beautiful miracle was doing. As I was stopped at a red light, I heard a god-awful noise, and after a few moments I realized, I had been severely rear ended, totaling our car.  By the grace of God, I walked away from the accident. However I did wind up in the hospital with spinal cord injuries which led to 4 back surgeries. Unfortunately the last surgery left me paralyzed. I have never felt so scared in my life.

Why me?
How am I going to do this?
What will my family think?
How am I going to support my family?
Can I still be the best father to our daughter?
Do I want to even live?

As the questions started to creep in the darkness soon followed. Depression settled in and suicidal thoughts percolated to the surface.  I just didn’t know what to do next….
